Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, announced that his nation’s armed forces were “strengthening” their positions in the Kursk area of Russia, where Kyiv has been waging a significant cross-border incursion, reports RTE.
“General (Oleksandr) Syrsky reported on the strengthening of the positions of our forces in the Kursk region and the expansion of stabilised territory,” said Zelensky, reports RTE.
The head of the Ukrainian army is General Syrsky.
It happens at the same time as Russia’s foreign ministry claims Ukraine destroyed a bridge over the Seym river in the Kursk area with Western rockets, most likely HIMARS developed in the US, killing volunteers who were attempting to evacuate people.
“As a result of the attack on the bridge over the Seym River in the Glushkovo district, it was completely destroyed, and volunteers who were assisting the evacuated civilian population were killed,” reports RTE.
“Western-made rocket launchers, most likely American HIMARS, hit the Kursk region for the first time,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated late yesterday on the messaging app Telegram.
General Syrsky of Ukraine reported yesterday that, eleven days after the start of the invasion into Russia, Kyiv’s soldiers were making progress of one to three km in some sections of the Kursk region, reports RTE.
Since August 6, Kyiv claims to have gained control of 82 communities spanning 1,150 square km in the area.
Reuters was unable to independently corroborate the accounts from either side of the conflict, reports RTE.
The first ground attack by Ukraine on Russian territory was allegedly supported and encouraged by the West, according to Russia, which also said that Kyiv’s “terrorist invasion” would not alter the outcome of the conflict.
According to authorities in Washington, the United States, which has declared that it cannot permit Russian President Vladimir Putin to prevail in the war that he began in February 2022, views the unexpected invasion as a defensive action that warrants the employment of US weapons.
In a related development, Mr. Zelensky declared that the situation in the towns of Pokrovsk and Toretsk on the eastern front was “under control” following reports from Russia that it had made many advances in recent weeks in their direction, reports RTE.
