Domestic and sexual violence will not be tolerated, claims McEntee

Domestic and sexual abuse will not be accepted, according to the minister of justice, “regardless of who you are or where you work,” reports RTE.

According to Helen McEntee, this is an epidemic that is having an effect on all facets of Irish society.

She expressed her gratitude to all of the victims of sexual and domestic abuse who have come forward and shared their stories, emphasising the necessity for everyone to continue bringing this topic up.

Speaking as she was being sworn into the Cabinet, Ms. McEntee emphasised the need for the government to keep up its focus on strengthening the legal system, providing assistance for victims, and ensuring that those guilty of these crimes face consequences, reports RTE.

She said that serious punishments are imposed for these kinds of offences, and that this has been the case lately.

The message that “irrespective of who you are or where you work, we will not tolerate any form of domestic or sexual violence” is what the minister stated needed to be emphasised.

According to her, An Garda Síochána has made this obvious, and “the same needs to happen in the Defence Forces” to ensure that it is a secure environment, reports RTE.

In general, she added, everybody in society should be aware of what consent is and how such discussions happen.

Minister McEntee acknowledged that there is a great deal of work to be done but insisted that it is the top priority.

She said: “We need to be absolutely clear, irrespective of who you are or where you work, that we will not tolerate any form of domestic or sexual violence against a colleague or any other individual. That’s been made very clear in the gardaí. We can see that in recent court rulings – for example Paul Moody, his subsequent dismissal from the gardai,” reports RTE.
