Don’t let the bed bugs bite: Bed bug cases on the rise in Ireland and the UK as pest controllers report a sharp increase of cases

The Irish and British public has seen a sharp increase of bed bug cases in the past few months, with pest controllers reporting a high volume of cases.

According to pest control groups both and in the UK there has been a 140% of cases since the summer. It is believed the sharp increase has come about due to holidaymakers unknowingly carrying the bugs home in their luggage or clothing.

One leading expert David Cross, head of Rentokil’s technical training academy, explained why the problem is becoming more common saying: “International travel has rocketed and is likely to be the cause of the bed bug population explosion in the UK. We were virtually free of the pests until about 10 years ago.”

“The best way to kill bed bugs is through temperature change.
“Anything above 54C or below minus 34C will kill them.”
