Double trouble: The birth rate of twins around the world reaches its highest ever

Twins may be more common today than ever before in history, according to the world’s first comprehensive survey of twin births.

According to the Guardian, researchers analysed records from more than 100 countries and found that the twin birth rate has increased significantly since the 1980s. One in 42 people is now born as twins, or 1.6 million children a year. According to the study, the global twin birth rate has increased by an average of one third over the past 40 years.

Rather than see the trend continue, the world may have reached a so-called “peak twin” claim the authors, as recent data suggests that in some countries the coincidence rates are stabilizing or even declining compared to historic peaks.
