Dozens of people have been arrested by Australian police during a massive ‘Day of Freedom’ anti-lockdown protest in Melbourne, RT reports.

Hundreds of people gathered at the city’s Shrine of Remembrance to demand an end to Victoria’s stage 4 lockdown, which includes a nightly curfew. Video footage shows protestors clashing with police, who were out in heavy force including riot gear.

The crowds chanted ‘Freedom’ at the officers as scuffles erupted across the area. Victoria police drew controversy for their pre-protests arrests, including that of a pregnant woman that wrought international condemnation. Some reports say police were stopping motorists before the event in the hope of arresting protesters before the crowds gathered.

Victoria’s Premier Daniel Andres told a press briefing that the protests could lead to an extended lockdown, calling the protests ‘not safe’ and ‘not the law’.
