Dr Cillian De Gascun says Ireland could return to phase two if cases continue to rise

Ireland could return to phase two of lockdown restrictions in the coming weeks ahead if the number of Covid-19 cases continue to rise.

The claim was made by Dr Cillian De Gascun whi said that nothing has been ruled out in terms of containing the spread of the virus.

Speaking on Today with Sarah McInerney, Dr De Gascun said a reintroduction of restrictions may be required if cases rise to high double digits or the hundreds.

However despite the rise in cases Dr De Gascun said that Ireland remains in a good position especially compared to the rise in cases in other parts of the world.

Although he did reiterate that the public must proceed with caution, he stated that NPHET would hope to continue going forwards rather than backwards in terms of living with virus.

He added that nothing was certain in terms of tackling the virus but we are prepared to move backwards if it is in the interest of public safety.
