Dr Glynn says Ireland is in a precarious position as R number is between 1.2 and 1.8

The acting Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronan Glynn has said that the country is in a precarious position as the latest R number is now between 1.2 and 1.8.

The announcement comes as phase 4 of the lifting of restrictions has been postponed until August 10th.

It is understood that the R number has significantly risen in recent weeks and Medical experts are concerned about the rise in cases.

Speaking at NPHET public health meeting, Dr Glynn said it is highly important to reduce the number once again and therefore keep the virus surpressed in the country.

Dr Glynn urged the public to follow government guidelines by maintaining social distancing and to wear face masks whilst in public places such as shops and other indoor areas.
