British comedian Ricky Gervais has hit out at “cancel culture” in an interview with talkRadio in which he referred to the popular practice of shunning and boycotting people who express non-mainstream or controversial ideas as a “sort of fascism”.
Gervais made the comments during a passionate defence of freedom of speech which is finding itself under increasing attack by adherents of political correctness and so-called “wokeness”.
Gervais is certainly not one for shying from controversy in the past and earlier this year at the 77th Golden Globes awards he left his celebrity audience squirming in their seats after lambasting them over connections to child sex trafficker Jeffery Epstein and their code of silence around disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein.
Gervais even told the audience of Hollywood elite to “shut up” after they groaned when he joked about Epstein “not killing himself” inferring he was murdered to keep his silence about his alleged elite clientele.
Earlier this month the fearless comedian took another unveiled dig at Hollywood when he tweeted:
“It’s Emmy Voting week! So if you’re an Emmy Member, and you’re not a pedo, please vote for me for Best Actor in a Comedy. Thanks.”
The Daily Mail reported that over 150 celebrated authors, academics and journalists signed an open letter earlier this month condemning “cancel culture”.
