It is 2016 after all, and most people in the developed world would expect to enjoy clean water to drink any day of the week.

Not so in Ireland, it seems, where the dilapidated state of the water infrastructure seems to cause boil water notices to be enforced with alarming regularity.

Tonight, however, up to 10,000 people around Cork city can finally turn on the tap and see a crystalline liquid pouring out.

A boil water notice was issued eight months ago, affecting tens of thousands of users whose supply was linked to Whitegate Water Treatment Plant.

According to Irish Water, 1m was poured into the facility to make the water drinkable again. The notice has been lifted today, and residents can now enjoy the privileges of Western civilization once again.
