Dublin is third most congested city across Europe as drivers were delayed 95 hours this year

Dublin has become the third most congested city in Europe and ranks 11th globally, according to a new report by Inrix.

The study found that motorists in the capital spent an average of 95 hours stuck in traffic during 2025, which is four hours more than drivers in London and eight hours more than those in Los Angeles, reports Breaking News.

Traffic delays in Dublin have risen by 17 per cent over the past year, leading the city to climb four places in the worldwide congestion rankings.

Brian Caulfield, a professor of transportation at the Centre for Transport Research, said there is no quick fix to address Dublin’s traffic congestion problem.

Speaking on Newstalk, he said: “There’s a number of reasons why congestion is so bad at the moment. Primarily because our population has increased. We haven’t really delivered any new public transport infrastructure in the capital since 2017. That was the last time we built a new Luas line. So, a lack of investment in public transport has really led to this. Any fixes in terms of how we can alleviate congestion are probably at least five/10 years away with the likes of, say, the Luas line to Finglas or the MetroLink system. They’re a good bit away in terms on construction and for us to deliver them to try and reduce this congestion,” reports Breaking News.
