Dublin man died of water intoxication after drinking too much water following routine hospital procedure

Sean O’Donnell, a 59-year-old father of three from Dublin, tragically passed away after developing water intoxication following a routine procedure at St. Vincent’s University Hospital. The High Court heard that Mr. O’Donnell had been instructed to drink excessive amounts of water as part of his post-procedure recovery process in January 2020. The overconsumption of water caused hyponatremia, a condition in which sodium levels in the blood become dangerously low, leading to cerebral oedema (swelling of the brain), seizures, and ultimately cardiac arrest.

Breaking News reports that the hospital acknowledged a breach of duty of care during the settlement hearing, admitting fault in failing to monitor Mr. O’Donnell’s hydration levels adequately. His family pursued legal action, seeking accountability for what they described as a preventable tragedy. During the case, medical experts emphasized the rarity of water intoxication but highlighted the importance of proper guidelines and education for hospital staff regarding post-procedure hydration.

Mr. O’Donnell was remembered by his family as a devoted father and a kind-hearted individual. The family expressed relief at the resolution of the case but stressed the need for healthcare providers to ensure that such incidents do not happen in the future. The coroner, in their findings, recommended mandatory staff training on managing patients’ fluid intake and sodium levels to prevent similar cases of medical misadventure.
