Permission has been granted for the construction of an ‘urban beach’ in Dun Laoghaire, Dublin.
Plans for the €2.5m project were submitted almost a year ago
Amenities will include an artificial beach, a cafe, and a floating swimming pool with heated, treated sea water. Changing rooms, bathrooms, and showers will also be built onsite.
The beach will be overlaid on the existing structure of berth 1 on the East Pier, and it is expected to operate for six months a year.
The expectations are that, once fully operational, the facility will attract in excess of 150,000 visitors, and generate a revenue of €1m annually.
Fifteen objections were lodged to the urban beach project, with many feeling that the money would be better spent restoring the nearby Dun Laoghaire baths.
