There have been calls for the Green Party Leader Eamon Ryan to step down over his insistence that Peat cannot be harvested to the required level here in Ireland even though close to 4,000 tonnes of it was imported to Co Louth from Latvia.
In what can only be described as truly disgraceful, a shipment of some 3,600 tonnes of horticultural peat was imported to Drogheda Port after harvesting of peat was banned in Ireland.
A massive convoy of over 200 lorries met the freight of peat, which was imported from Latvia.
This is the first massive import of horticultural peat to Ireland since the ludicrous ban in September 2019 with many other shipments from the Baltic States and other EU countries expected to arrive here over the next number of months to meet the horticultural demands of the nation.
Many people are blaming Eamon Ryan and the Green Party over this absolutely absurd ruling.
It’s understood that importing horticultural peat is extremely expensive and actually comes at a much higher cost both financially and environmentally.
