Embarrassing: Ireland beaten by Luxembourg in World Cup qualifier

Embarrassing, woeful and quite simply not good enough are just some of the words to sum up Ireland’s performance this evening as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Luxembourg.

In what was a pretty much win match Ireland looked completely out of their depth as a team ranked 98th in the world took the spoils in an empty Aviva Stadium.

Following on from Wednesday’s 3-2 defeat to Serbia, it would be easy to say Ireland’s World Cup dreams are in tatters, but the bigger question surely has to be is Stephen Kenny’s time up.

It is now ten games without a win for the former Dubdalk FC manager and even to most armchair pundit it is plain to see that the team is simply not performing.

Although many will say we don’t have the players to warrant any serious qualification challenge, the fact is losing to a team such as Luxembourg can happen but in reality it shouldn’t.

Kenny will now face some serious questioning by the nations media and now it seems the FAI have some contemplating to do themselves.
