The European Union has granted the Ukrainian people a human rights award for their courageous resistance in the face of Russian aggression and brutality.
The Sakharov Prize, named after Russian dissident Andrei Sakharov, honors individuals or groups standing up for, and defending freedom at all costs.
Imprisoned Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny won the prize last year.
