Eyebrows raised over the common travel area as anyone coming into Ireland, including UK citizens, will now have to be vax

People arriving at Irish ports and airports will need a negative Covid-19 test as of Friday, the cabinet agreed.

It’s understood that passengers can have a professional antigen test up to 48 hours prior to arrival or a PCR test up to 72 hours prior to arrival.

The requirement of a negative test applies to all travelers, including those from the UK, with some querying the common travel area.

The Department of Transport is in talks with airlines and ferry companies to ensure that certified antigen tests or PCR tests are checked before people board flights or ships to Ireland.

The government will propose a law on Thursday that will allow the reintroduction of mandatory quarantine in hotels in the Dáil.
