Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin set to become Taoiseach as the party discusses terms with Fine Gael and the Green Party

The more things change, the more they stay the same, in Ireland at least, as Fianna Fail and Fine Gael appear set to maintain their almost centenary chokehold on power, propped up by the Green Party this time around.

Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin is on course to become Taoiseach first, as part of a ‘rotating Taoiseach’ agreement that will see the three top men (Martin, Varadkar, and Ryan) getting a go every few months.

Sinn Fein did win the popular vote in the last election, but were unable to cobble together the 80 seats required to form a Government.
