The Fianna Fáil party have confirmed this morning that a leading Senator has resigned from the party.

Senator Jim Walsh from Co Wexford submitted his formal resignation yesterday afternoon. Mr Walsh resignation comes as he strongly opposes the Children and Family Relationships Bill which is currently being put before the Seanad. It is understood that Senator Walsh, had recently tabled several amendments to the bill, which included revisions that would see IVF treatment being only available to heterosexual couples.

Mr Walsh’s proposals were subsequently rejected as the Children and Family Relationships Bill deals with a range of issues, which includes adoption rights for same-sex couples. Fianna Fail say that Senator Walsh met with party leader Micheál Martin yesterday morning to tender his resignation which was subsequently accepted.
