Figures released by Irish Water show that two thirds of people had paid their bill by the end of first billing year, and also that thousands went on to cancel their direct debits

Irish Water lost almost €10m in revenue after thousands of customers cancelled their direct debits with the company, it has emerged today.

The company says that two thirds of customers had paid their charges by the end of the first billing year, but this percentage dropped considerably after it emerged that the water charges would be suspended.

According to company sources, customers are still liable to pay their charges up to the point when the suspension becomes effective.
