The tragic death of Fine Gael Roscommon councillor John Naughten, who was expected to run for the party in the upcoming general election, has shocked Taoiseach Simon Harris, reports Breaking News.

The brother of Deputy Denis Naughten, the South Roscommon Fine Gael councillor, has served on the Roscommon County Council for more than 20 years. He was chosen to represent Fine Gael in the next election two weeks ago.

“Today, the Fine Gael family is in mourning,” said Mr Harris. “We are utterly bereft at the death of our friend and colleague, John Naughten. John was a decent, gentle, personable and hard-working man. He had friends and close colleagues across the political spectrum. He was a caring father, brother, son and husband,” reports Breaking News.

“To John’s wife Breda, to his daughters Emma, Leah and Orlaith, to his mother, Mary, as well as his siblings Marian, Aine, Denis, Seamus, Liam Óg, Joseph and Dermot, I am so sorry for your loss,” reports Breaking News.

Mr Naughten was referred to as “a good friend, a great colleague, and a good man” by Fine Gael deputy Frank Feighan.

Ciaran Mullooly, an MEP, expressed his amazement and sadness at the news. We got together in St. Mary’s Square, Athlone, on several occasions. I’m thinking of his family, reports Breaking News.
