Murder investigation launched after prisoner dies in incident at Cloverhill Prison

Following the death of a prisoner at Dublin’s Cloverhill Prison this morning, a murder inquiry is underway, reports RTE.

When prison officials learnt that three prisoners were having a fight in a cell, they discovered a 43-year-old man dead at approximately 5:30 in the morning.

The victim, who was known to the gardaí for participation in major and organised crime, was from Ballyfermot in west Dublin.

Targeted by the Dublin Crime Response Team, he was taken into custody in August of last year following an armed police stop in Ballyfermot where they found a kilogramme of cannabis and a firearm, reports RTE.

The incident happened this morning while he was being held on remand at Cloverhill for trial for drug and gun offences.

The injuries that are being treated on a second prisoner are thought to not be life-threatening.

He was taken to a different portion of the prison, along with the third man in the cell, to be questioned by garda investigators, reports RTE.

The scene has been maintained, and requests have been made to the Garda Technical Bureau and the Office of State Pathologist.

The probe will be headed by a Garda Senior Investigating Officer, while the man’s family will be paired with a Family Liaison Officer.

The Office of the Inspector of Prisons will conduct an investigation into the victim’s death, as will the Prison Service, which also sent its sympathies to the victim’s family, reports RTE.
