The fines for some traffic offences are set to double from tonight.
Speeding fines go from €80 to €160, mobile phone use fines from €60 to €120, and fines for non-wearing of seatbelts and failing to secure a child also jump to €120.
This is the first increase in these fines in two decades, so the increase had to be hefty enough to make up for lost time.
