Northern Ireland will see more monkeypox cases, chief medical officer Michael McBride says.

Mr McBride spoke as the Northern Public Health Agency confirmed the first case of the virus was identified today on the island of Ireland.

It’s understood that the CMO believes that strict public health measures would prevent the disease from becoming endemic like the widespread outbreak we’ve since over the past two years.

Health chiefs have also said that the risk of infection remains low at this time.

In the South, the Tanaiste Leo Varadkar said it was inevitable” that monkeypox would be discovered in the Republic.
