Two marine scientists sailing around the Celtic Sea, around 100 miles off the south west coast of Ireland, enjoyed the first-time ever spotting of a Hammerhead shark swimming around Irish latitudes.
Hammerheads usually dwell in warm waters in the Caribbean and West Africa, so it’s quite unusual for a specimen to be seen this far north.
Scientists have postulated that steady rising of water temperatures around Ireland and other northern latitudes may mean that shark visit become more and more frequent over the coming decades.
Hammerheads are relatively harmless to humans. Though seventeen attacks have been documented over the years, there have been no fatalities.
