It is understood that five people at the shamed Áras Attracta care facility in Co. Mayo are to be charged with assault, following a garda inquiry into the claims of mistreatment of residents.
Such inquiry followed an undercover RTE Investigations Unit programme last December.
Footage was obtained showing residents with intellectual disabilities being slapped, force fed, physically restrained and shouted at.
A total of 13 staff were suspended following the programme, and separate inquiries were launched by the Health Service Executive and the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA).
After examining all the available evidence, Gardai will now bring assault charges against five staff members. The remaining eight will not face prosecution.
The charges will be brought under Section 2 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, and court proceedings will get underway in the coming months.
