The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has issued recall notices for various batches of Manor Farm and Western Brand chicken products, along with specific batches of Lidl chicken breast fillet products, due to the possible presence of salmonella.

The authority is urging consumers to check their freezers for these items and has advised that recall notices will be displayed at the point of sale.

Manor Farm chicken products are sold in major supermarkets including Aldi, Dunnes Stores, Lidl, Centra, SuperValu and Tesco, often under the retailers’ own brand names.

Western Brand is recalling various batches of chicken products sold under the Lidl and Inishella brand names.

The additional affected products include specific batches of Lidl Free Range 100% Irish Chicken Breast Fillets (291g) and 100% Irish Diced Chicken Breast Fillets (550g).

All impacted products have use-by dates between 12 and 13 April. Although these dates have passed, the FSAI has confirmed the products are suitable for home freezing.

Consumers who find any of the affected batches in their freezers should not eat them.

The FSAI has reminded people that salmonella infection typically causes symptoms between 12 and 36 hours after exposure, though this can range from six to 72 hours. The most common symptom is diarrhoea, which may sometimes be bloody, along with possible fever, headache and abdominal cramps. The illness usually lasts four to seven days, but in some cases diarrhoea can be severe enough to require hospital treatment. The elderly, infants and those with weakened immune systems are more likely to experience serious illness.

Yesterday, the FSAI also announced a separate recall for specific batches of Western Brand Sage & Onion Cook in Bag whole chicken due to possible salmonella. These products were sold in Aldi and Tesco with use-by dates of 13 and 14 May.
