The former husband of ex-first lady Jill Biden has been arrested and charged with murder following the death of his current wife at their home in Delaware in December, according to local police last night.

William Stevenson, 77, was married to Jill Biden between 1970 and 1975. She later married former US president Joe Biden in 1977, reports RTE.

Mr Stevenson has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of his wife, Linda Stevenson, aged 64, who died on 28 December, New Castle County Police in Delaware said.

He was taken into custody on Monday and remains in jail after failing to post $500,000 in cash bail, reports RTE.

In December, police said they discovered Linda Stevenson unresponsive in the living room after responding to a report of a domestic dispute at the couple’s Wilmington home shortly after 11pm (4am Irish time).

Efforts to save her life were unsuccessful and she was later pronounced dead, reports RTE.

Authorities said yesterday they were not releasing details on how Ms Stevenson died and did not provide further information about the investigation.

Ms Stevenson was described as “deeply family-oriented and treasured time spent making memories, especially on family vacations with her daughter and granddaughter,” according to her obituary, reports RTE.

She was a supporter of the Philadelphia Eagles and had recently been running a bookkeeping business.

“Linda will be remembered as tenacious, kind-hearted, and fiercely loyal,” the obituary said, reports RTE.

“Her strength, resilience, and unwavering love for her family and friends will never be forgotten, and her absence will be felt deeply by all who knew her.”
