According to authorities and the airline, a Singapore Airlines aircraft experienced intense turbulence this morning that threw passengers and crew throughout the cabin and forced the jet to land in Bangkok, resulting in one passenger’s death and thirty injuries, reports RTE.

The general manager of Bangkok Suvarnabhumi airport, Kittipong Kittikachorn, stated during a news conference that the plane, which was headed from London to Singapore, suffered turbulence and dropped into an air pocket while the cabin crew was serving breakfast.

This prompted the pilots to request an emergency landing, reports RTE.

Four Irish citizens were aboard the flight, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs, however it is unclear if they were among the several wounded persons.

A department spokeswoman said: “We are aware that four Irish citizens were on board. The Embassy is in close contact with the relevant Thai authorities and stands ready to provide all appropriate consular assistance,” reports RTE.
