In a video capturing a private phone conversation, former US president Barack Obama and his spouse Michelle have backed Kamala Harris’s presidential candidacy, reports RTE.

“We called to say Michelle and I couldn’t be prouder to endorse you and to do everything we can to get you through this election and into the Oval Office,” Mr. Obama said to Ms. Harris.

“You have my admiration. The former first lady informed Ms. Harris that “this is going to be historic.”

With a few smiles and a phone conversation, Ms. Harris thanked them for their long relationship and the recommendation, reports RTE.

“I appreciate you both. It has immense meaning. We’re going to enjoy ourselves with this as well,” Ms. Harris added, reports RTE.

According to the campaign, the video was not a reenactment but the real call.

Less than a week after President Joe Biden withdrew from the campaign due to declining polling, Ms. Harris’s unexpected bid against Republican competitor Donald Trump is gathering momentum among fans, funders, and legislators.

More than ten years have gone since Mr. Obama’s last election, yet he is still regarded as one of the Democratic party’s most popular politicians. Mr. Obama is the first black president of the United States, reports RTE.

Obama has given Mr. Biden his support at high-profile fundraisers, some of the most successful events of his campaign.

The endorsement indicates that he will probably start supporting Ms. Harris on the campaign trail once she is formally declared the presumed nominee, which may assist galvanise and maintain momentum and money for her campaign, reports RTE.

Initially, even as her former vice president, Joe Biden, hailed her as his successor apparent, Mr. Obama declined to support her.

It has been alleged that Mr. Obama was unwilling to tip the scales as the party selected its nominee, reports RTE.
