A number of batches of cooked ham have been recalled from retail outlets by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland due to the possible presence of listeria monocytogenes.
The hams are from the Brady Family, Tesco Finest and Lidl’s Deluxe range, reports RTE.
Retailers have been asked to remove the implicated batches from sale and display recall notices at point-of-sale, while consumers have been advised not to consume the affected products.
According to the FSAI, symptoms of Listeria monocytogenes infection can include mild flu-like symptoms or gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, reports RTE.
In rare cases the infection can be more severe, causing serious complications.
Some people are more vulnerable to Listeria monocytogenes infections, including pregnant women, babies and people with weakened immune systems, including the elderly, reports RTE.
O’Brien Fine Foods, which produces the products, said Listeria monocytogenes was detected in a single batch of one product as part of a routine safety monitoring programme.
It said the products listed in the FSAI notice were produced in the same production area on the same day as the affected batch, and that Listeria monocytogenes has not, at this time, been detected in any of these products, reports RTE.
It said the affected batch was identified at source, quarantined and did not enter the market.
The company said that “out of an abundance of caution” it was decided to recall the products as “a precautionary measure,” reports RTE.
It added: “We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused and thank consumers for their understanding and cooperation.”
The recalled products are: Brady Family Wood Smoked Real Irish Ham 6 Slices 80g (batch code 235417, use-by date 16/07/2026); Brady Family Hand Crumbed Real Irish Ham 6 Slices 80g (batch codes 235880 and 235765); Deluxe Triple Oak Smoked Carved Irish Ham 5 Slices 130g (batch code 235461); Deluxe Honey Roast Carved Irish Ham 5 Slices 130g (batch code 235473); and Tesco Finest Crumbed Shaved Ham 16 Slices 120g (batch code 235412), reports RTE.
The FSAI also issued a recall notice for Butchers Selection Irish Turkey Burgers Mediterranean Style with a use-by date of 5 July, due to the presence of salmonella, with common symptoms including diarrhoea, headache and abdominal cramps, reports RTE.
