A high-speed train derailed in France today, killing seven people. The accident occurred in Eckwersheim, a town near Strasbourg. The train crashed into a canal which lies alongside the tracks. Broken parts were strewn across the adjacent field.
The train was undergoing a trial on a new high-speed line from Paris to Strasbourg line and technicians are believed to have been on board at the time of the crash. The second section of the Paris-Strasbourg high-speed TGV line on which the crash happened is set to open for service in April 2016.
Medical units including police divers were on the scene. Emergency services arrived at the scene shortly after the crash happened and the injured were airlifted to hospital.
