GAA calls for empirical evidence as sporting events now have to be played behind doors

The GAA have invited the acting Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronan Glynn to meet with the organisation’s Covid-19 advisory group following the introduction of the latest Covid-19 restrictions.

In a statement the association called on Dr Glynn and the National Public Health Emergency Team to provide empirical evidence which has led to “the association to curtail its activities”.

The statement also says that the association will be issuing an invitation with immediate effect.

Although the GAA say they remain committed to protecting public health, it is understood that the association is seeking clarity over the government’s decision to order matches to be played behind closed doors.

The news of all sporting events being played behind closed doors has come as blow to the association who had provisionally agreed to allow up to 200 fans to attend games.

It was also hoped that the number could have been extended to 500 before the recent rise in Covid-19 cases.
