
A garda was injured in a hit-and-run in Westmeath Friday morning after the driver of a car he approached sped off from the scene, reports The Mirror.
The incident took place in the Heathfield area of Kinnegad while patrol gardaí were responding to an alert from their automatic number-plate recognition system.
As the garda walked up to the vehicle, it drove off, hitting him in the process, reports The Mirror.
He was taken to Midlands Regional Hospital in Mullingar with non-life-threatening injuries and has since been discharged.
The red Volkswagen Golf involved was located shortly after in Boreen Bradach, a well-known walking route in Kinnegad, reports The Mirror.
Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident to get in touch.
“Gardaí are investigating a hit-and-run road traffic collision which occurred in the Heathfield area of Kinnegad, Co. Westmeath today, Thursday 10th April 2025,” said a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána. The incident occurred at approximately 10am,” they added, reports The Mirror.
Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) who were travelling in the area, today, Thursday 10th April 2025, are asked to make this footage available to gardaí. Gardaí are particularly interested in the movements of this red Volkswagen Golf, partial registration number 04TS, travelling in the Kinnegad area earlier today,” reports The Mirror.
