Garda Commissioner Drew Harris pulls back on claiming “far left” were involved in Saturday’s anti-lockdown protest

The Garda Commissioner Drew Harris has made a statement clarifying what he had said about those involved in Saturday’s protests in Dublin city center.

Harris initially said most of those involved were from different factions, including the far left.

According to RTE, this morning Harris said that “despite initial indications, following further investigations, there is no corroborated evidence of extreme left factions being involved”.

In the statement, Harris said that “vast majority of those who took part belong to a number of factions including anti-vaccine, anti-mask and anti-lockdown protestors, far right groups, and those intent on trouble and disorder”.

A Garda Síochána said they viewed radical left factions or groups as those who intended to use violence for political reasons.

Meanwhile, anti-lockdown organisers say that the vast majority of people at the protest were peaceful and that they’re going to hold more protests in the coming weeks.
