Gardaí promise to have an increased visibility on Dublin streets

Senior garda management met business owners in Dublin this morning to discuss policing and crime in the capital following a spate of violent attacks in recent weeks, reports RTE.

A Garda Síochána has pledged to increase visibility on the streets to tackle anti-social behaviour.

The government has allocated additional funding of €10 million.

The meeting between senior gardaí officers and around 190 business owners took place at the Gaiety Theater and lasted around an hour.

In a later speech, Deputy Commissioner Angela Willis expressed concern about the “perception of fear” and the public feeling that the city is not safe, reports RTE.

The District Commissioner acknowledged that a highly-visible police presence is essential to restore a sense of security on the streets.

Ms Willis outlined plans that would increase visibility and put armed response units on standby if needed.

Dublin Town, a group representing entrepreneurs in the capital city, described the meeting as constructive and positive.

The minister expressed “full confidence” in the commissioner

Meanwhile, Justice Minister Helen McEntee expressed “full confidence” in Garda Commissioner Drew Harris, who said he would continue his job.

Referring to the debate over the introduction of the new roster, the minister said he fully understood that a “roster is something that is so important for a member of An Garda Síochána, their families and family life”, reports RTE.

Ms McEntee described Commissioner Harris as “honourable” and someone of “integrity”, with whom she works closely and who works a “difficult” job.
