Gardai say 135 mobile phones are stolen every week in Ireland

Around €5 million worth of mobile phones have been stolen in Ireland over the past 20 months.

RTE reports that Gardai received reports of 11,488 cell phones were stolen between January 2019 and August 2020, or close to 135 phones per week.

The figures were compiled by the analysis service of An Garda Síochána and give a stark reality as to how people should be very careful with their phone out in public.

The Garda divisions in Dublin saw the most number of stolen phones. 2,868 phones were stolen in the DMR’s South Central Division alone.

During this same period, 1,869 phones were reportedly stolen in the North Central Division of DMR. It’s reported by the gardai that only around 10% of phones are ever recovered from theft.
