Gardai say 137 motorists arrested for driving under influence over Bank Holiday weekend

Over 130 drivers have been taken into custody for driving while intoxicated thus far during the Bank Holiday weekend, reports RTE.

As part of An Garda Síochana’s Bank Holiday Road Safety Strategy, drug and alcohol testing of drivers is being conducted at garda checkpoints around the nation starting at 7am on Thursday.

137 people have been arrested for driving under the influence as of this morning at 7 a.m., according to Superintendent Liam Geraghty, who described it as a “very busy operation”, reports RTE.

On Friday, a new clause in the Road Traffic Act went into effect, requiring drug testing of every motorist involved in a major incident.

According to Supt. Geraghty, gardaí “consistently focus” on speed during enforcement campaigns. This weekend, two notable speeding detections occurred: one vehicle was detected travelling at 190 km/h on the N4 in Mullingar, and another motorcyclist was caught at 146 km/h in an 80 km/h zone in Co Wicklow.

Supt. Geraghty declared, “These kinds of speeds are completely unacceptable on our roads,” reports RTE.
