In the first four weeks of 2025, there have been twelve traffic-related fatalities, three less than during the same time previous year, reports RTE.
The forthcoming February bank holiday weekend will see a noticeable enforcement presence throughout the nation, according to the GardaÃ.
Collisions are typically more likely to occur at this time, particularly for young, male drivers, reports RTE.
“Our message to motorists is to stay safe, expect the unexpected and therefore when you’re on the roads, slow down,” said Assistant Commissioner of An Garda SÃochána Roads Policing and Community Engagement Paula Hilman.
Many roads in the northwest and midlands are still blocked by fallen trees and debris, so drivers in areas still impacted by Storm Éowyn have been asked to exercise additional caution, reports RTE.
In the worst-hit areas, trees and power poles that were weakened by the storm may still collapse and have an additional effect on the roadways.
Ms Hilman said: “Those people who have a journey to make by car this weekend, especially in areas still impacted by the storm, please make sure your focus is on the road and drive with extra caution. There may still be debris, trees or fallen and low-hanging electrical wires to be careful of when out on the roads whether you are driving, cycling or walking,” reports RTE.
Road Safety Authority CEO Sam Waide said: “The storm has gone away, but the weather conditions are still going to be unpredictable over the weekend. So, from a road safety point of view, let’s not forget that every time we go on the road, whether you’re walking, cycling, driving, there’s always a risk, the risk of being involved in a road traffic collision,” reports RTE.
So far this year, two individuals under the age of 25 have lost their lives on our roadways.
According to the GardaÃ, on each of the four days of the St. Brigid’s Day bank holiday weekend, the danger of a fatal or major traffic collision is highest between noon and three o’clock, reports RTE.
According to data compiled by the Garda Analysis Service, on Friday, January 31, 2025, a driver is most likely to be involved in a traffic accident that results in death or serious injury during these hours.
During the night, drivers under 25 are twice as likely to be involved in a collision that results in death or serious injury.
Sixty of the 175 individuals who died in car accidents last year were between the ages of sixteen and twenty-five, reports RTE.
