There was more good news for Irish sport this weekend as Irish boxer Michael Conlan took the gold medal at the European Championships in Bulgaria this afternoon.
Conlan bantam weight world number 7 defeated his British opponent Qais Ashfaq to take the gold medal this afternoon. Conlan took the first round unanimously as all three judges voted in his favour, however the plucky Brit gave his all in the second round and was narrowly defeated by the Irishman. The third round was a similar affair with conlan getting the decision once more.
The world number 7 will now focus his concentration on representing Ireland at the Rio Olympics next year.
