Mexico has recorded the lowest number of murders in nearly three years in the month of November, Mexican officials said earlier this week, but 2020 could still surpass last year’s record number of murders across the country.
Acting Security Minister Ricardo MejÃa said there were 2,670 murders in November, the lowest monthly number since President Andrés Manuel López Obrador took office.
The November number is the lowest monthly total since February 2018, when 2,445 murders were recorded.
MejÃa said the killings last month centered on six states: Guanajuato, Baja California, Chihuahua, Jalisco, Michoacan and the state of Mexico.
Despite the monthly decline, Mexico could still narrowly surpass the 34,670 murders recorded in 2019 for the full year.
