The Irish government are pushing ahead with plans to criminalise speech it opposes under the guise of “hate speech” legislation.
On Gov.ie website the new hate speech bill is described as having the following aim:
“The new legislation will criminalize any intentional or reckless communication or behavior that is likely to incite violence or hatred against a person or persons because they are associated with a protected characteristic.”
Justice Minister Helen McEntee is pushing the legislation in the hopes of succeeding where her predecessor failed.
However, what is determined to be “hate speech” will be at the discretion of the government and it is feared that the Orwellian legislation will be used to silence those who the government’s agenda.
It is likely that the thought crime laws will be used to persecute members of the public such as the working-class community of East Wall, Dublin who are seeking to have a migrant plantation removed from their area.
