Government approves €1 BILLION taxpayer money to accommodate new arrivals from Ukraine and around the world

The government approved an additional spending estimate of 1 billion euros for the Department of Children and Integration, reports RTE.

The money is needed for housing costs for people fleeing the war in Ukraine and for people applying for international protection.

The money will come from funds included in the last budget and will not affect spending in any other department, reports RTE.

The number of people in Ukraine using state-provided housing now exceeds 70,000 and is growing by about 550 every week.

The number of people with international protection increased from 8,600 in January 2022 to 23,200 today.

Integration Minister Roderick O’Gorman said there was a housing shortage and it was likely that tents would continue to be used to meet the challenge, reports RTE.
