Government could postpone pay by weight bin charges until a cap is introduced

According to reports this morning it is believed the Government are considering making changes to the proposed ‘pay-by-weight’ bin charges.

It is understood the highly contested waste charges could be postponed until a cap on charges is introduced. It is thought the pay-by-weight scheme would remain in place but a possible cap could be placed to stop waste management companies exploiting the scheme.

The news comes after the Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government Simon Coveney met with private waste operators in Athlone last night. Mr Coveney said that he was committed to a pay-by-weight approach, which he said would reduce bills for those who manage their waste.

Although, he said huge increases in standing charges were not acceptable and he would not rule out introducing new regulations if necessary.
