Kenny: “Irish emigrants abroad should be given the right to vote for President”

The Taoiseach and Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny has recently revealed that he would like to give emigrants the right to vote for President.

Mr Kenny made his comments recently whilst he was speaking to a group of Irish emigrants in Manchester. The Taoiseach said he firmly believes that former citizens living abroad who currently hold an Irish passport should be able to vote.

Mr Kenny also said votes for emigrants is an issue he has asked the Minister for the Diaspora, Joe McHugh, to look into: “This is an issue that has been around for a very long time.

“There have been quite sophisticated advances made, in terms of voting from abroad. “And we need to set out a terms of reference, as to the conditions that would apply in terms of who should be eligible to vote and how that should apply and that will be a priority for the Minister for the Diaspora.”
