‘Government must raise minimum wage by €1,’ according to Unite trade union

Euro-notes-2006-007

According to Unite, Ireland is experiencing a low-pay crisis, and the gap in wage levels is becoming significantly wider.

The Unite trade union is today calling on the Government to increase the minimum wage by €1, from €8.65 to €9.65.

They are also calling for the implementation of a Wage Recovery Package, to improve the incomes for those on low rates of pay.

Jimmy Kelly, secretary of Unite, says that the low pay commission should increase the minimum wage as soon as possible.

He stated:  “We should immediately increase the minimum wage by a euro to €9.65 per hour from €8.65.

“We welcome the fact the Government introduced a low pay commission. We don’t think it needs a big study or a big analysis to realise, because it has stayed at the same level since 2007, that it needs to be increased now.”
