Government should ban the taxi fare algorithms, says TD

A TD has urged the Government to introduce laws that would prohibit the use of algorithms to determine taxi fares.

This follows a series of meetings between drivers and Government representatives this week to discuss their concerns and objections to the Uber model, reports The Mirror.

Dublin West TD Ruth Coppinger has urged people to boycott Uber and is calling for new legislation that would prevent algorithms from setting fixed prices.

Speaking on Newstalk, she said: “There’s two things that need to happen. I think the drivers need to boycott Uber. I think everybody here, TDS and public figures should say that they won’t use Uber for what they are doing to these drivers. However, that isn’t sufficient because we need to legislate as well”, reports The Mirror.

In recent weeks, taxi drivers have staged a number of “slow protests” around Dublin in response to Uber’s introduction of fixed pricing.

Drivers argue that fixed fares mean they could lose income, particularly when traffic delays or detours force their journey to take longer than expected, reports The Mirror.

A planned six-day demonstration scheduled for this week has been temporarily suspended while Government discussions continue.
