Government tells unemployed to leave the country to find work

The Department of Social Protection has advised 13,000 unemployed people to leave Ireland and seek work abroad. Letters sent to jobseekers pointed out job opportunities in other European countries.

The letters are part of a European jobs initiative to make people aware of opportunities throughout the common market. The number of letters increased drastically last year. Only 4,000 such letters were issued in 2013.

Unemployment remains stubbornly high while the government has been criticised for the levels of emigration from Ireland since the economic crisis began.
