Jerry Brown, the Governor of California, has signed new legislation that allows for regular balcony inspections, in the wake of the Berkeley tragedy.
Six youngsters, including five Irish students, were killed when the balcony they were standing on suddenly broke away from the building in Berkeley, California, on June 16 2015. Seven others were seriously injured.
The new bill stipulates that load-bearing outdoor elements such as balconies, decks, porches, stairs, walkways, and entryways must be inspected every six years.
