It is believed that the government has given its preliminary consent to look into financial sources for a community hotel in Roscrea, County Tipperary, reports RTE.
During a meeting between local representatives and Minister for Integration Roderic O’Gorman, Fianna Fáil TD Jackie Cahill presented the proposition.
The meeting was deemed “very positive” by Mr. Cahill.
Minister of State for the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, and Sport Thomas Byrne announced government intentions to build a “community-owned” hotel in Roscrea during an appearance on RTÉ’s Prime Time.
“Clearly, there’s a great need for the facilities that a hotel offers to the community,” he said, reports RTE.
Up to seventeen asylum seekers—thought to include women and kids—were placed in the Racket Hall hotel, which is close to Roscrea.
Yesterday, while the applicants for international protection were being taken into the hotel, there were fights between demonstrators and gardaí, reports RTE.
