Govt debate whether to allow Ukrainians holiday in Ukraine for Christmas

Senior officials from multiple Government departments are still working on changes to accommodation arrangements and welfare rates for new arrivals from Ukraine, reports RTE.

At the last Cabinet meeting, this matter led to a heated and inconclusive debate.

The potential options being considered include allowing refugees to stay in dormitory-style State accommodation for 90 days after which they would need to find their own place to live.

Discussions are also underway to determine how children staying in these facilities would receive education, reports RTE.

Additionally, proposals are being drafted to reduce the weekly welfare rates for Ukrainians seeking refuge in the future.

Unfortunately, it is unlikely that this matter will be finalized before the Cabinet meeting tomorrow as Tánaiste Micheál Martin will be absent, beginning his visit to Beijing and Shanghai today, reports RTE.
